Wellsley Farms Nuts by the Ounce: Which Jar or Bag Is the Better Buy

A three-pound bag of nuts is a bargain only if the price by the ounce is low, and only if the last handful tastes as good as the first. Both are easy to judge before you buy.

Wellsley Farms cashews, almonds and pistachios standing on a pantry shelf

The Wellsley Farms nut shelf holds 21 packs right now, from a 10 oz pouch to a five-pound bag. The prices on the tags run from $13.48 to $44.99, and those numbers tell you little on their own. A bigger pack costs more and may still be the better buy.

Put every pack on the same scale, the price for one ounce, and the shelf sorts itself. Then comes the second question a big pack raises: will you finish it while it still tastes good?

Four of the packs compared below. Figures are from the price update of 6 October 2026.

The whole nut shelf, ranked by the ounce

The table lists every Wellsley Farms nut pack that is priced by weight, cheapest ounce first. Where a product is sold in more than one pack size, the row shows the pack with the lowest price per ounce.

Salted Roasted Peanuts in the Shell is the cheapest ounce on the shelf at 30¢. Macadamia Nuts, Salted & Dry Roasted is the dearest at $1.40. That is a gap of 4.7 times between the two ends of one shelf, and it has nothing to do with the size of the number on the tag.

The order follows the nut more than the brand of pack. Peanuts sit at the cheap end, as they do in every store. Almonds and walnuts hold the middle, and cashews and macadamias cost more. If the budget is tight, the choice of nut moves the bill further than the choice of pack.

The sum. Price divided by ounces. A $30 jar that holds 42 oz costs 71 cents an ounce. Do it once for each pack and the shelf sorts itself.

Why the tag price misleads

Club packs are sized to look like round value: three pounds, two and a half pounds, a jar you need two hands to lift. The sizes do not match from one nut to the next, though. One jar holds 34 oz, its neighbour 42 oz, and a third 40 oz. You cannot compare them by eye.

Take the two salted cashew jars. The 34 oz jar costs $34.00 and the 42 oz jar costs $30.50. By the ounce, the smaller jar comes to $1.00 and the larger to 73¢. The bigger jar wins by the ounce, and here it also has the lower tag. Prices on these two move often, so check both tags on the day you buy.

Four cashew jars, four different weights.

Multi-packs add a second trap. Two jars taped together look like a deal, and sometimes they are one. Sometimes the pair costs more per ounce than a single jar from another seller. Every pack size has its own per-ounce figure, and the lowest is not always the biggest pack.

Salted or unsalted: the same nut, a different job

Salt changes what a nut is for. A salted cashew is a snack. An unsalted one is an ingredient: it goes into granola, curry, cashew cream and cookie dough, where you set the salt yourself.

Salted against unsalted, price per ounce
NutSaltedUnsalted
Whole cashews42 oz jar at 73¢42 oz jar at 79¢
Peanuts in the shell5 lb bag at 30¢5 lb bag at 30¢
Extra fancy mixed nuts35 oz jar at $1.2942 oz jar at 90¢

Price rarely settles this one. The two versions of a nut cost about the same to grow and roast, and the gap in the table comes from who is selling, not from the salt. Choose by use, then check the per-ounce figure to see what the choice costs you.

The Daily Value for sodium is less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Sodium in Your Diet, read 6 October 2026

The label on each jar gives the sodium in one serving. If someone in the house is counting milligrams against that daily figure, the unsalted jar removes the question. You can always add a pinch of salt to a bowl. You cannot take it out.

Jar, can or bag

Of the packs ranked above, 9 are jars or cans and 11 are bags or pouches. The jars and cans average 86¢ an ounce and the bags average 68¢. The mix of nuts differs between the two groups, so read that as a rough guide and not a rule.

Jar or bag. A jar for the counter and the snack bowl. A bag for the baking shelf and the freezer.

The pack changes how you live with the nuts more than what you pay. A jar has a wide mouth and a screw lid. It stands on a counter, and a child can open it. A bag reseals with a press strip that works well for the first ten openings and less well after that.

A bag has one advantage a jar cannot match: it lies flat. That matters if you plan to freeze part of it, and for walnuts and pecans you should. Squeeze the air out, press the strip shut and the bag slides into a freezer drawer.

The baking nuts all come in bags that lie flat in a freezer.

Baking cuts: sliced, chopped, halves and flour

Five packs on the shelf are cut for the oven. You pay a little for the knife work, and you get it back in time. Nobody slices two pounds of almonds by hand.

Baking nuts by price per ounce
ProductPackPricePer ounce
Shelled Walnuts48 oz bag$19.9942¢ per oz
Super-Fine Almond Flour2 lb bag$13.9944¢ per oz
Sliced Almonds32 oz bag$22.2570¢ per oz
Chopped Walnuts32 oz bag$22.2570¢ per oz
Pecan Halves24 oz bag$19.8083¢ per oz

Match the cut to the recipe. Sliced almonds toast in four minutes and burn in six, so they go on top of a cake near the end of the bake. Chopped walnuts fold into batter as they are. Pecan halves hold their shape on a pie. Almond flour is a different product altogether: it replaces wheat flour in recipes written for it, and it does not swap one for one.

A cut nut has more surface open to the air than a whole one, and it goes stale sooner. Buy the baking bags close to the day you bake, and freeze what the recipe leaves over.

In the shell: what the weight includes

3 packs on the shelf are sold in the shell: salted roasted peanuts in the shell (5 lb bag), unsalted roasted peanuts in the shell (5 lb bag) and roasted & salted pistachios (48 oz bag). Part of every ounce is shell, and you throw that part away.

In-shell packs
ProductPackPricePer ounce, shell included
Salted Roasted Peanuts in the Shell5 lb bag$23.9930¢ per oz
Unsalted Roasted Peanuts in the Shell5 lb bag$23.9930¢ per oz
Roasted & Salted Pistachios48 oz bag$28.9860¢ per oz

That does not make them a bad buy. The shell slows you down, and a slow snack lasts longer. A five-pound bag of peanuts on a porch table keeps a group busy through a whole game. Reviewers also buy the unsalted bag for blue jays and squirrels, which is a use no jar of cashews will ever have.

Buy in-shell nuts for the cracking. If you want nut meat for a recipe, buy it shelled and compare those prices among themselves.

Mixed nuts: read what the label names

A can of mixed nuts is priced by its cheapest nut and sold by its dearest. The front of the pack tells you which is which if you read past the word mixed.

What each mix names on its label

Peanuts come first on the ingredient line of the 56 oz can and of the Heart Healthy bag. The extra fancy jar names five tree nuts and no peanuts, and it costs more by the ounce for that reason. Two buyers of the Heart Healthy bag complained about the share of peanuts in it.

Back label of a Wellsley Farms Roasted Mixed Nuts can naming peanuts first
The back label of the 56 oz can. Peanuts lead the ingredient line, and the label lists the allergens the can may also carry in traces.

Neither kind of mix is wrong. A party bowl does fine with peanuts in it. A gift tin, or a mix for someone who avoids peanuts, calls for the jar that names its nuts one by one.

Roasted, dry roasted or raw

Three words on the front of a pack tell you how the nut was cooked, and the ingredient line confirms it. Dry roasted means heat and no oil: the pistachio bag lists dry roasted pistachios and salt, and nothing else. Roasted, with no other word, usually means oil in the roaster. The back label of the 56 oz mixed nut can names its roasting oils, and one of the unsalted cashew jars names peanut oil among its ingredients.

Dry roasted, oil roasted and raw: the ingredient line tells them apart.

That last detail matters to a household that avoids peanuts. A cashew roasted in peanut oil is still sold as a cashew. Read the ingredient line of any roasted nut before you buy it for someone with a peanut allergy.

Raw nuts, the pecan halves and whole almonds here, have had no heat at all. They taste milder and softer. Ten minutes in a 350°F oven changes that, and the kitchen will smell of it.

How long a big pack keeps

Nuts are full of oil, and oil goes stale. Warmth and air speed that up. The U.S. Department of Agriculture publishes storage times in its FoodKeeper data, and the rows for nuts are short enough to quote in full.

Storage times for nuts, USDA FoodKeeper data
FoodPantryRefrigeratorFreezer
Nuts in jars or cans1 year unopened4 to 6 months after opening6 to 12 months
Peanuts in the shell4 months12 months24 months
Shelled peanuts4 weeks12 months24 months
Walnuts2 to 4 weeks9 to 12 months24 months

Read the walnut row twice. The data gives walnuts 2 to 4 weeks in a pantry and 9 to 12 months in a refrigerator. A three-pound bag of shelled walnuts will not be gone in a month in most homes, so the bag belongs in the cold from the day it arrives.

  1. 1

    Split the pack

Keep two weeks of nuts in a jar on the counter.

  2. 2

    Chill the rest

Seal the remainder and put it in the refrigerator or freezer.

  3. 3

    Refill as you go

Top up the counter jar from the cold supply.

Frozen nuts need no thawing for baking. For snacking, ten minutes on the counter brings them back. Taste one before you tip a cup into a batter: a stale nut tastes like paint, and it will carry that into the whole cake.

Your own pace

The storage table only helps if you know your own pace. A common serving of nuts is one ounce, about a small handful. The table below turns each pack into days at that rate.

Days a pack lasts at one ounce per person per day
PackOne personTwo peopleFour people
Macadamia Nuts, Salted & Dry Roasted, 10 oz pouch10 days5 days3 days
Heart Healthy Mixed Nuts, 21 oz bag21 days11 days5 days
Whole Fancy Cashews, Salted & Roasted, 42 oz jar42 days21 days11 days
Whole Almonds, 48 oz bag48 days24 days12 days
Roasted Mixed Nuts, 56 oz can56 days28 days14 days
Salted Roasted Peanuts in the Shell, 5 lb bag80 days40 days20 days

Set those days against the storage times. An opened jar keeps 4 to 6 months in the refrigerator by the FoodKeeper data. One person eating an ounce a day finishes a 42 oz jar in six weeks, well inside that window. The five-pound bag is another matter. It suits a family, a party or a freezer.

If the numbers say you will not finish a pack in time, the smaller pack is the cheaper one, whatever its price per ounce. Nuts you throw away cost the full price and feed no one.

A month of snack nuts for four, worked out

Put the pieces together with one example. Four people who each eat an ounce a day go through about 120 oz of nuts in a month. Here are three ways to buy that much from this shelf.

Three ways to buy a month of nuts for four people
BasketOuncesCostPer ounce
Two 5 lb bags of salted peanuts in the shell160$47.9830¢
One 56 oz can of mixed nuts, one 48 oz bag of almonds, one 21 oz bag of Heart Healthy mix125$90.9773¢
Three 42 oz jars of salted cashews126$91.5073¢

Read the last column and not the cost, because the baskets hold different weights, and the peanut basket counts its shells. The middle basket is the one most families would enjoy longest: it has three different things in it, so nobody tires of the bowl by the third week.

Allergies: the label is the authority

Peanuts and tree nuts are two of the major food allergens under U.S. law, and the law treats them as separate foods.

This law identified eight foods as major food allergens: milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Food Allergies, read 6 October 2026

Sesame joined that list in 2023, which makes nine. For a nut buyer, the practical point is cross-contact. Many nut packs carry a line about traces of other nuts, and the mixed nut can pictured above lists milk, soy, wheat and sesame as possible traces too.

People with food allergies should read labels and avoid the foods they are allergic to.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Food Allergies, read 6 October 2026

A Contains line on a pack is a starting point. Recipes and packing lines change, so go by the label on the pack in your hand. If an allergy in your house is serious, read that label before the seal is broken.

What buyers say about the nuts

Ratings on the nut shelf are good and not perfect. Buyers praise freshness and price. The complaints are about stale bags, a mix heavy on peanuts, and honey roasted peanuts that did not taste of honey.

  • 5 out of 5

    Fresh and tasty

I was hesitant to order because of the recent reviews but these are the best rated in-shell peanuts I could find. They are fresh and taste good.I will buy again.

  • 5 out of 5

    Always fresh, great buy!

These peanuts are always fresh and always intact. They're the perfect salty. They will not disappoint you. Highly recommend. This is my 3rd or 4th bag.

  • 5 out of 5

Great for feeding the Blue Jays!

Needed these unsalted peanuts to feed the Blue jays in my yard! The price is best I’ve found.

  • 4 out of 5

    Very Tasty!

Very good quality, good price, and very tasty! I have been trying to not each so many carbs and these are a great snack that gives you the crunch and saltiness that satisfies the cravings. A little too salty, but still very good. Good size for the price and they have always tasted fresh. I've bought them multiple times and will continue to as long as they don't raise the price.

  • 3 out of 5

    They're very dried out

These Peanuts are not nice they're too dried out and a lot of empty shells, will not buy again, but it's my fault I should've bought a smaller bag first before buying this big one, it's a waste of money

  • 1 out of 5

    Not high quality

Definitely not a grade A product. Either the nuts are very old or they were cooked until all the oil was gone. Crunchy is good, but these nuts are woody and nearly tasteless. Very disappointing.

A low rating on a nut is nearly always about one of two things: age or expectation. You can do little about the first except order from a seller with recent reviews. The second you can fix by reading the label and the ingredient line before you buy.
